Curb Appeal

The initial response to someone pulling up to your home is commonly referred to as “curb appeal.” It’s that aesthetic quality you notice (or don’t) when you first pull up to a home. If a home were a person, its the same as first impression. Needless to say, if you’re selling your home and taking that task to heart then you’ll have put in the necessary time to address building this aesthetic. After all, the feeling you create is what people will remember. So let’s dive in the top inexpensive ways to give your home curb appeal!

Landscaping

  • A good focus on your lawn and it’s design are impactful. Every person visiting the home to view it will walk past it twice and view it thrice! Make sure the grass is mowed, edged and manicured. Remove weeds.
  • Planting shrubs, small trees or seasonal flowers. You can utilize both planting pots and flower beds. Hanging pots near the entry are a great way to bring some visual interest and color to the home.
  • Rocks & Mulch are both useful in garden beds and as a way to create shape and texture. You may need to refresh both for a more polished look.

Front Entry

  • Make sure to freshen up the front door. If it has scratches or is peeling, then consider repainting. It may also that it just needs a good wash. Is the doorknob hardware appropriate? Does it enhance the look of the entrance?
  • Exterior lighting around or near the front entry can give it a glimmer and make the entrance more inviting. For those that view the home in the evenings when it’s dark, the lighting can make a huge difference. As with so many things, lighting is everything. It effects the expression of color and therefore mood.
  • Have a welcome mat to greet visitors!

Exterior

  • Clean and power wash the exterior of the house. Get rid of dirt and stains on walkways, walls, windows and any visible surfaces. Power wash the driveway.
  • Are there cracks and peeling paint or siding that is damaged? Address these things.
  • Do you have fences and gates or decks that need to be painted, stained or repaired. The small things add up.

Declutter

  • Absolutely remove random items that are littering the yard and exterior spaces of the home. This may include tools, toys, and any belongings that have piled up.
  • Remove anything no longer serving a purpose. This may include loose fittings and yard projects never finished.
  • Remove and replace any decor that has aged and is taking away from the aesthetic and charm.

Approach

  • Be honest with yourself. The important thing is to get these tasks accomplished. If you can do it, great but if not don’t hesitate to hire some help to get this done.
  • Once accomplished, you’ll be steps closer to making that great first impression and imparting confidence in potential buyers that the home they are considering purchasing has been well taken care of.
